The UMC In Mission to the World

submitted by Bonnie Hyatt

I often wonder if many UMC people know of all that the Global UMC and our New York

Annual Conference does in Mission. I hope these mission blurbs will inform and inspire

you.

The City Society is one such mission. A brief history from their website:

“The City Society began, 180 years ago in 1838, when Methodist women saw the need

to move outside the comfort of their church buildings to teach children to read. They

wanted to share the light of Christ with children and then their families. They

established the forerunner of the 'charity schools' which then became public schools."

It is always sad when a church closes.  But the story of Trinity-James Senior Housing speaks to me of transformation from the ashes. Look at what God can do with the ashes!!  New life.  I often ponder; this building is built on holy ground of the former Trinity Morrisania UMC in the Bronx. Think for a

moment all the praise and prayers that were said on this ground since 1874.   I love that they saved pieces of the building architecture and pictures of the church and pews in the lobby, giving respect and a legacy to those who came before. God is making all things new.
